Fun Facts about Alpacas!

• Alpacas are of theCamelidaefamily, which includes llamas and camels.

• Alpacas have some of the silkiest and most versatile fiber found in nature! The fiber of alpacas has been said to be stronger than mohair, finer than cashmere, smoother than silk, softer than cotton, warmer than goose down and more breathable than thermal knits. It’s also hypoallergenic and can be processed without high temperatures and harsh chemicals.

• The Incas domesticated alpacas more than 6000 years ago and raised them for their fleece. Back then the fiber was reserved for elite and the nobility.

• Alpaca fibers come in 22 colours and hundreds of shades.

• The most common sound that alpacas make is humming. Alpacas hum when curious, content, worried, bored, fearful, distressed or cautious.
