Can you BEE-lieve it? Facts about the honey bee
• Honeybees are very important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that honeybees help other plants grow!
• Honeybees live in hives (or colonies). The hive members are divided into 3 types: Queen, Workers, and Drones.
• One Queen bee runs the whole hive. She lays the eggs that will spawn the next generation of bees in the hive. She also produces chemicals that guide the behaviour of the other bees.
• The worker bees are all female and their job is to forage for food like pollen and nectar, build and protect the hive, and clean/circulate the air by beating their wings.
• The drone bees are the male bees and their job is to mate with the new queen. Hundreds live in the hive during the spring and summer, but when winter comes around and the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out of the hive!
• Honey bees fly at a speed of about 25km per hour and they beat their wings 200 times per second!
• Bees each have 170 odorant receptors meaning they have a very good sense of smell. They use these receptors to communicate in the hive and to recognize different types of flowers.
